Jones, Atlas

Atlas Jones (d. 1841), the son of Ebenezer Jones of Massachusetts, came to Smithfield, NC, with his physician brother Calvin Jones (1775-1846). Second in a class of six students, Atlas received his BA in 1804, was a University tutor from 1804 to 1806, and received an MA in 1811. A planter and lawyer, he served in the NC House of Commons from 1811 to 1812. He was a state senator from 1816 to 1817 and a trustee from 1809 to 1825.
